A Tattoo artist, from Mumbai, with a world record is the story of our article today. Tattooing is one of the oldest methods of body modification, with evidence dating back to over 2000 years ago. Tattoos have been used as a means of self-expression throughout the ages and in many different cultures. However, choosing it as a profession comes with challenges. Especially if the artist is female and if she belongs to a country like India that only supports certain professions and nothing beyond them. Tejasvi Prabhulkar broke all the rules and became a famous Mumbai tattoo artist.

Tejasvi Prabhulkar is a tattoo artist from Mumbai. She was passionate about art and after struggling a lot she turned her artistic abilities into a successful career. Though life tested her ability on each road she walked on. Let us hear her story.

Tejasvi Prabhulkar’s Story

Myself, Tejasvi Prabhulkar. I belong to the Maharashtrian City of Mumbai. I’m a tattoo artist. I became a tattoo artist because I love to draw and always wanted to do art for a living. I loved that getting a tattoo was about more than just ink and skin, it’s about the experience of the whole thing. However, my life didn’t go as smoothly as I had planned it to. The journey had both roses and thorns.

When I was 17 years old, I decided to learn Tattooing because I was passionate about art. I’d often draw behind my notebooks. So, that’s why I thought to take formal training in tattooing. At that time, I had my first tattoo. The artist had written my name Tejasvi on my body. I asked him to do it because people would pronounce my name wrongly. Sometimes it would become Tejasvini, Tejashree, Jogeshwari, and whatnot. I was fed up with misspellings. So I thought to print it on my body.

It was a remarkable moment in my life. For me, it was just a great way to express myself permanently and beautifully. It is also a tool for memory keeping. If you have one, you can easily tell what has happened in the past and why it happened. Today, my tattoos cover more than half of my body and they are one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made.

Though taking it as my profession was never a part of the plan. At first, I thought about joining the Merchant Navy but my parents didn’t agree due to financial crunches. So, I opted for software engineering. While studying, I realized that I cannot continue it. I love being around art and it is my true calling.

Tejasvi Prabhulkar: A Tattoo Artist in the Making

I told my parents that I want to be a tattoo artist but they were against my choice. They thought I’ll be among those ladies who sit outside the mall or beach to draw tattoos on people’s bodies. They saw it as a minor job that wouldn’t get me enough money and respect.

I showed them Kat Von D’s video only to tell them that at present Tattooing is a very lucrative industry. The trend of getting inked has increased by leaps and bounds. It’s not just about fashion anymore. It has become more than that and is now an art form. In recent years, tattooists have earned a great reputation for themselves and brought in a lot of money.

After this discussion, they said yes but kept a condition before me. They asked me to complete my graduation first and then become a tattoo artist. I enrolled for BMM but I dropped it in the last year. Since that time, I’m doing tattoos and wall paintings.

People would taunt me for leaving college and to answer them back, I decided to create a world record. Because I knew people in India support you only when you are successful. They will taunt you until you make it happen and a world record can help me in establishing myself as a tattoo artist.

A Tattoo Artist from Mumbai with a World Record

Through research, I came across Limca Book of records. I contacted them through email and they said I can create a record if I have 100 tattoos on my body but I will have to do it within a month.

I already had 25 tattoos. To have the rest 75 tattoos I tried to search for an artist. No artist would agree because 75 tattoos within a month was a difficult target to achieve. Then one artist agreed to do it but he lived in Panvel and his studio was 1.5 hours away from my home. I didn’t have any other option so I said yes.

“Daily, I used to travel 3 to 4 hours after getting 3 to 4 consecutive tattoos! At times I’d come back limping, I’d feel nauseous and weak in my body.”

At times, my body burnt like it was on fire. My parents tried their best to persuade me to drop the idea of creating this record but I didn’t give up. After reaching 50 tattoos the artist started harassing me. It was my breaking point. I wanted to give up but my friends motivated me to go for it. So, I continued the journey and after 3 months they declared me as  ‘Most Tattooed Woman in India.’ The media covered my story through interviews that went viral. People started supporting my work.

I called the Limca Book of Records

The World Record Came With a Price

Then I began to receive semi-nude modeling assignments and clients. However, people didn’t stop speaking negatively. They said ‘You are doing semi-nude photoshoots. No one will marry you. Men are not comfortable with such professions.’ So I made up my mind to stay single forever.

After a while, I met a guy and we fell in love then got married. He was fine with my shoot routine but he would always run a safety background check. Sadly, after a month of marriage, I lost him in a car accident.

It was a bitter time of my life. It is still very difficult to speak about because every time I think of what happened, I relive the pain as if it happened yesterday. I tried to end my life as my world had turned upside down, and I felt like it would never be right again. I’m not one to complain, but those few months have been extremely tough on me. His love gave me the strength to carry on with my life. He’d tell me in dreams ‘You have come a long way. How could you give up now? Continue with your life.’ To keep him in my memory, I tattooed his name on my hand so I could keep his essence with me.

Advice to Aspiring Tattoo Artists

Currently, I’m working as a tattoo artist and model. I’m willing to establish tattoo studios all over the country. That’s my dream.

For novice artists willing to get into the industry, I’d like to say the tattoo industry has seen an incredible amount of growth over the past decade. As tattoos have become more popular, so have the number of individuals entering this field. A career as a tattoo artist can be extremely rewarding, but it also requires commitment and hard work to get where you want to be.

The life of a tattoo artist is not as glamorous as the movies make it seem. The hours are long, and the pay is even worse than minimum wage. Despite this, most tattoo artists love their work more than anything else they could do with their lives.

As a tattoo artist, while drawing I get a glimpse into the mind of my clients. Most of the time, I see that they require something more than just wanting a new tattoo. They seek out some form of emotional release or healing from past wounds. For me, this means recovery, not only for my clients but also for myself as an artist.

The popularity of tattoos depends upon the kind of design that you choose for yourself. A good tattoo does not come cheap, and if you are looking for a quality job then you need to have the best skills to impress your clients.
